6E Farm's Angora Goats
I've
been wanting to add Angora goats to the farm for quite awhile. Their
fleece, also called Mohair when it is off the goat, is wonderful for
spinning and their quiet, docile personalities make them a great addition.
Angora goats are sheared twice per year, once in the spring and once in the
fall. The first and second clip of a kid are the most valuable
being the softest. It is excellent for close to the skin
garments. The third and fourth clip of the yearling have developed
lock and have luster and make great novelty yarns. The adult clips are
good for blending with other wools and for knitting outer wear such as sweaters.
This makes them wonderful fiber animals for the hand spinner.
Angora goats, especially the white, tend to be rather delicate and feed is a
special consideration. Since almost all of their energy goes to hair
production, their protein needs are higher. They are also more susceptible
to parasites and kids are not as hardy if kidded in the winter time and so
protection from cold and wet is important.
In
the spring of 07 we partnered with Stephen Kruzich building our herd of AAGBA
Angora does and then found Awesome, our CAGBA Angora buck. We brought in a
registered Pygmy buck to breed to the girls and so next year we should have
adorable little registered Pygora babies!
Mohair fiber is available in the spring and fall. Pricing varies
according to the clip and whether it is raw or washed. Check the farm
store or contact us about availability.
